Jeff Manthos was born in Langley, VA in 1953. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Northern Colorado where he studied music and viola performance, Jeff enrolled in the Violin Making School of America. After finishing the violin making school, Jeff first worked at the Thomas Metzler Violin Shop in Los Angeles and later the David Kerr Violin Shop in Portland, Oregon.
Still living in Portland, Jeff now devotes all of his time to the making of new instruments.
In the fall of 1994, Jeff entered a violin in the Violin Society of America competition. This violin was a copy of a 1743 Sanctus Seraphin. After receiving a recommendation for a gold medal from the tone judges, Jeff received a Silver Medal for the competition. For more information on the Sanctus Serphin copy and the 1994 VSA competition, see “Sidestepping Cremona” in the July/August 1995 Copy of Strings Magazine.
